PlayLab: Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

PlayLabs are artistic experiments working with original or adapted stories. Together we re-imagine literature. Students explore story lines, characters, dialogue, and character movements to foster a deeper understanding of each theatrical element and the role it plays in a performance. Students are allowed the freedom of artistic expression and play an active role in the creative process. PlayLabs are enhanced by sets, lights, costumes and all the theatre magic we can create.

Percy Jackson’s life is complicated – he struggles to focus in school with dyslexia and ADHD, he and his best friend Grover are frequently bullied, and his mom is married to the worst stepfather imaginable. Until one day, on a class field trip, a teacher transforms into a mythical Fury and attacks him – and Percy’s life becomes much more complicated. He discovers that he is a demigod, the son of a mortal woman and Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. After learning to use his powers at Camp Half-Blood, the summer camp for demigod children, Percy is sent on a quest with his friends Grover Underwood the satyr and Annabeth Chase, daughter of Athena, to retrieve on of Zeus’s master lightning bolts before war breaks out among the gods, and the entire world is put at risk.
