Conservatory: Commedia, Comedy & Clowning

WEST Acting Conservatories  are open to all students ages 13-18 years old with a sincere desire to learn the craft of theatre to high standard of excellence.  The nature of a conservatory is intensive–students are engaged in activity every moment of their scheduled time.

Commedia – We explore the very roots of the art of Commedia dell’arte comedy as we delve into our favorite stock characters of the Italian Renaissance.  Pantalone, Columbina, El Capitan and Dottore will be there alongside the clown Arlequino.  This class combines physical acting with masks, physical humor, and structured improvisations (lazzi) scenario

Comedy – Study contemporary comedic acting techniques that draw from parodies of reality: making observations about ordinary life and then adding a comedic twist! Exercises will include physical comedy & theatre, discovering physicality through observation, creating characters through exaggeration and imitation, and explore the comedy of opposites and defying expectations.

Clowning – Everyone has an inner clown – Discover yours! Instructors are experts in character development, slapstick, how to take a pie in the face, mime, scene development and much more. Don a funny nose and learn the techniques of the masters.
