The Art of Belly Dance

Belly dance is a Western term for traditional Arab dance styles, especially raqs sharqi. It is sometimes called “Middle Eastern Dance” or “Arabic Dance” in the United States.  Belly dance takes many different forms depending on country and region, both in costume and dance style, and new styles have been invented in the West as its popularity has spread worldwide.

This class will be an introductory beginning session focusing on beginning steps and choreography to be used in the PlayLab presentation The Arabian Nights. Students will learn a few basic belly dance moves, some veil technique, and will be introduced to the music and its rhythms. At the end of the course each student will have a very beginning knowledge of how to belly dance and a choreography that they can perform with ease.
