Sketch Comedy Writing Workshop

Sam Sterbenz is a working comedian in Chicago IL. He’s currently studying comedy writing and performance at Columbia College Chicago. He does solo sketch, stand-up and is currently a member of two improv troupes: Ladies Lunch, and Whine Night, which has been coached by Second City director and performer, John Hildreth. Sam has studied under Second City director and author of the book Guru: My Days with Del Close, Jeff Griggs, and has studied techniques from Lecoq, Del Close and Viola Spolin with Richard Walker, the director of the world renowned Improvised Shakespeare Company at iO. Sam performs weekly at many different theaters around Chicago including Second City, the Annoyance, the Crowd and his improv troupe Whine Night has a recurring show twice a month at the Playground Theater.

In this 3 day workshop, students will receive a crash-course in sketch comedy and practice write their own original sketches. Using techniques from improv and comedy cornerstones such as Second City and 5 Point Structure formatting, students will explore many different types of sketches and learn how to work on their own sketch writing as well as collaborating with other comedians. Using improv games and foundational sketch building skills, students will be given an introduction to sketch comedy and an opportunity to workshop their own material.

Students are required to bring a notebook and/or a device that is easy to take notes via voice recording.
