Special Programs: New Voices

New Voices – LGBTQQAI+ Performance Program –

The New Voices Youth Performance Program is a 10-week acting, playwriting, and interdisciplinary theatre training program that will provide new and experienced performers with the tools they need to create original performance work to amplify their voice in the community.

Topics will include but are not limited to; LGBTQQAI+ identity, activism, social justice, queer cultural heritage, and other relevant issues youth are facing in their homes and community.

Skill building classes will be conducted over Zoom where students will explore playwriting, personal performance storytelling, and immersive theatre tools each week.

Program Goals

Students will create their own original performance projects outside of class with the skills they learn, as well as participate in facilitated group feedback sessions to strengthen their work using the Liz Lerman feedback model. This semester’s class will culminate in an online public presentation for supportive friends and family, as well as specially invited community members.

The New Voices program is a serious commitment, both in and outside of class time. Acceptance into the program requires students to exhibit diligence, creativity, time management, the ability to work well with others, to be self-driven, as well as a commitment to attend ALL rehearsals, weekend workshops, tech rehearsals, the final showcase, and the audience Q&A.

Participants are expected to:

  1. Be open and willing to challenge themselves to explore personal expression in a group setting and support others in doing so.
  2. Meet all deadlines and obligations set by instructors from week to week.
  3. Participate to the best of their ability each week and to communicate openly with instructor on any circumstances that may affect participation or cause absence or prevent full participation.
